A boardwalk winds through a jungle valley of orchids, waterfalls, and a wild ocean cove, one of the most beautiful botanical gardens anywhere, on the lush Hamakua Coast.
On a jungle valley falling to the sea north of Hilo, this garden packs orchids, gingers, towering palms, and several waterfalls into a boardwalk loop that ends at a wild ocean cove. It is regularly named one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.
The wet side grows things the dry Kohala Coast never could, and kids happily chase the waterfalls and the shoreline. Our concierge pairs it with Akaka Falls and a slow drive down the Hamakua Coast.
It is a boardwalk loop with some stairs, so strollers are tricky, but kids love chasing the waterfalls down to the ocean cove at the bottom. It is worth every step.
Most families spend about 1.5 to 2 hours on the loop, longer if the kids linger at every waterfall. There is no need to book ahead.
There is an admission fee per adult, with lower rates for children and little ones often free. It goes toward caring for the reserve and its rare plants.
This is the wet, green side of the island, so pack a light rain jacket and shoes with grip for the boardwalk. A water bottle and a little bug spray round out the day.
The garden pairs beautifully with Akaka Falls and a slow drive down the Hamakua Coast. Our concierge can map the loop so it all flows into one easy day.
