Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo

A tiger resting in lush greenery at the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo near Hilo

The only tropical rainforest zoo in the country, and admission is free. Tigers, lemurs, and native nēnē under a Hilo-side canopy, an easy win with kids.

Set in an actual rainforest on the wet Hilo side, Pana’ewa is the only tropical zoo of its kind in the United States, and it is free. Kids meet a white Bengal tiger, lemurs, spider monkeys, and the native nēnē goose along shaded, easy paths, with a small petting zoo on weekends.

It is a low-key, genuinely local outing, and it slots neatly into a bigger day. Our concierge pairs it with Hilo’s farmers market and waterfalls, or a loop through Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

Good to know

How long does a visit take?

Typically about an hour to ninety minutes, which makes it a perfect stop on a Hilo or Hawai'i Volcanoes day. Bring rain jackets; the Hilo side is green for a reason.

How much does it cost?

General admission is free, which is remarkable for a zoo of this quality. There is a small fee for the petting zoo, which typically runs on weekends.

What ages is it best for?

All ages, and it is an easy win with younger children. The paths are short and shaded, so toddlers and grandparents manage it comfortably.

When is the best time to go?

Mornings are ideal, since the Hilo side often gets afternoon rain and the animals are more active earlier. Aim to arrive not long after the gates open.

Is it stroller-friendly?

Yes, the main loop is mostly flat and paved, so strollers do fine. A few spots can be damp after rain, so closed shoes help.
